“The director Mike Newell was visionary in his concepts, and Beatrix [Beatrix Pasztor, costume designer] was interested in exploring the idea that Miss Havisham while remaining caged inside her house and her own mind, she was also caged inside the dress which was disintegrating and revealing the bones and corsets beneath that were holding it together. The dress is a metaphor for the emotional graveyard that inhabits her mind.”

Since I first visited Vienna in 1998 I was fascinated by Franz Xaver Winterhalter’s portrait of Empress Elizabeth of Austria at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. This painting has inspired not only film and TV versions of Sissi’s life, but also other movies like Luchino Visconti’s Senso, or the BBC miniseries Great Expectations.
